CAST: NATASA PETROVIC, FEDJA STUKAN, STELLAN SKARSGÅRD, MIRAJ GRBIC, JELENA JOVANOVA
This film was inspired by actual events of the Balkan war. Based on a true story from a book of the same name by writer and journalist Slavenka Drakulić, it follows the fate of the young teacher, Samira, who is taken away from her village, along with the other women, by Serbian soldiers. She enters a new world where peace is a fairytale and where there are no homes, only camps – transit camp, reception camp, labour camp and death camp. The film frankly describes the inhuman treatment of these women and children, very few of whom survive till the liberation. We observe the horror of war and its consequences and are forced to think about how one should behave in such critical situations while still keeping a human face.

Cast: Thomas Schubert, Karin Lischka, Georg Friedrich, Gerhard Liebmann, Stefan Matousch
In the film Breathing, the director provides a compelling insight into the human psyche. 19-year-old Roman Kogler has a chance to be released early from the young offenders' institution where he has already spent four years due to his crime of manslaughter. The odds are against him, however: he is an uncommunicative loner without a family and doesn't seem to be fit for re-socialization. The only job he can get as a day-release prisoner is as an assistant in a funeral service. Of all things, it is this particular job of dealing with death that shows him the path back to life. This is Austrian actor Karl Markovics's debut as a director and screenwriter in this breathtaking film about coming back to the right path.

Greek version with Czech and English subtitles / 2010 / 83 min.
Cast: Vasso Kavalieratou, Efthymis Papadimitriou, Yannis Tsortekis, Donatos Tatsis, Foteini Kontoudaki
Ismini is a successful woman in her thirties. At first glance, she seems to be leading a happy life but... inside, things are quite different for her. She's an extreme introvert and struggles with emotions she is unable to express. Because of this, it is difficult to get to know her and this puts her in a complicated position concerning her relationships with men. But everything changes when Haris bursts into her life. Haris is a driver, just an ordinary guy, not at all handsome, but with a wonderfully charming openness and spontaneity. This Greek romantic comedy is inspired by the classic story of two people who successfully manage to make their way through all their differences. In short – opposites attract.

Director: Ralph Fiennes
English version with Czech subtitles / 2011 / 123 min.
Cast: Ralph Fiennes, Ashraf Barhom, Gerard Butler, Vanessa Redgrave, Jessica Chastain
Coriolanus, British actor Ralph Fiennes' directorial debut, has been met with critical acclaim from audiences and critics alike. This adaptation of William Shakespeare's play of the same name tells the story of Coriolanus, a military leader and war hero, who is expelled from Rome because of his opinions. Cast aside by his own nation, and driven by his desire for revenge, Coriolanus collaborates with his arch-enemy, Tull Aufidius, and plots to lead an army against the hated town. Fiennes updates this Shakespearean tale about betrayal and revenge, taking it out of ancient Rome and placing it in the present, thus giving it some of the attributes of an action film. The film features excellent performances by classical Shakespearean actors Ralph Fiennes, Brian Cox and Vanessa Redgrave.

This is a documentary about the last years in the life of José de Sousa Saramago, the first Portuguese writer to be awarded a Nobel Prize for Literature. However, the film's focus is not only on the world of his books, his significant talent and his opinions, but particularly on his longtime relationship with his wife, Pilar del Rio. Indeed, Saramago himself always defended love as a means of becoming a better person. This enchanting and moving film, which is spiced with the humour of an aging cynic and atheist, has turned out to be an unexpected blockbuster, not only in Portugal where it became the national nominee for an Oscar, but also at many festivals all over the world. Years ago, Jeremia Juunas Kirotaja was sent to Afghanistan to fight. He went missing and at that time, converted to Islam. Now he has returned home, only to find himself faced with another kind of war, where the front line in the decrepit Estonian town runs between Eastern and Western culture, men and women, common sense and madness. Somewhere amidst these battles is his daughter Angel who Kirotaja has decided to find after all his years of absence. His only leads are the sound of his daughter crying, heard only once on the telephone, and a dog-eared notebook full of letters addressed to her. Unfortunately Kirotaja is unaware that the town has other plans for him. Cast: Michael Fuith, David Rauchenberger, Christine Kain, Ursula Strauss
This film presents the last five months of 10-year-old Wolfgang, who is - against his will - living together with 35-year-old Michael. The film describes, without emotion or sentiment, the daily life of a man who feigns an idyllic family relationship with an unwilling boy who is forcibly confined. The respectable employee of an insurance company maintains the appearance of a normal lifestyle while attempting to cover up his on-going crime. The largely static shots from the cold, detached camera convey no more than is necessary for an understanding of the plot. The reserved directing style not only adds to the credibility of the film and gives it greater impact, but also dominates the outstanding performances of the central characters.

This routine is broken by an unexpected catch – a Turkish refugee, trying to get to Hungary and then on to the West. Although at first distrustful, Nelu gives the man shelter and his promise to help him cross the border, for which he will be well paid. PUNK IN AFRICA
Music
Czech Republic, South Africa
Director: Keith Jones, Deon Maas
Afrikaans-English-Portugese version with Czech and English subtitles / 2011 / 82 min.
Punk in Africa is the story of the multi-racial punk movement within the recent political and social upheavals experienced in three southern African countries: South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. In these societies, punk subculture responded radically to the intense political struggles and economic hardship taking place, and even to civil war. Punk in Africa traces this untold story from its roots in the underground rock music scene of early 1970s Johannesburg and the first multi-racial punk bands formed in the wake of the Soweto Uprising, through to the militant anti-apartheid hardcore and post-punk bands of the 1980s and up to the rise of the celebratory African-inspired ska bands which sprang up from Cape Town to Maputo in the democratic era of the 1990s.

As the deafening rattle of war dies away, we see Stevo running around in a field amongst the ruins of his badly damaged house. His wife was killed by a grenade and he has been left alone to raise his children. When it seems that the worst is over, we hear a terrible rumbling in the distance which is coming closer and closer. The confused Stevo discovers that the vehicle which has stopped in front of the house, is not a killing machine, but rather, an unusual contraption belonging to Circus Fantasticus. Getting to know this group of bizarre but utterly human circus characters changes the lives of Stevo and his children, and sets them off on a new journey. This Slovenian Foreign Language Oscar nominee blends the forgotten beauty of the circus with European magical realism and the absurdity of war.

SONNY BOY
National League
The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany
Director: Maria Peters
Dutch version with Czech and English subtitles / 2011 / 132 min.
Cast: Ricky Koole, Sergio Hasselbaink, Marcel Hensema, Micha Hulshof
Sonny Boy is a true love story which takes place in Holland at the beginning of World War II during the emergence of Nazism. It tells the story of Rika, an aging mother with four children, and Waldemar, a young student from Surinam who is 17 years younger than her. Europe in the 30's was an era bound by conventions and prejudice and the lovers are forced to face adversity and the disapproval of their slanderous neighbours who cannot accept Rika's illegitimate affair, especially because of its interraciality. This film about the relationship between a white woman and a black man in pre-war Europe is presented as an epic fresco of a family destroyed by war and human limitations, themes which are still very pertinent today.

With yet another boring summer ahead and almost no money left in the coffers, the boys decide to rent their house out to the local drug dealer. Although they don't have a place to stay now, thanks to their new friend, they can look forward to a summer of great fun and entertainment.
