The island of Bastøy serves as a large correctional facility for boys. The dictatorial headmaster (Stellan Skarsgård) keeps everyone under control by means of strict management. Using extreme discipline, hard manual labour and heavy penalties, the headmaster manages to break even the most rebellious boys. Things change with the arrival of Erling, a young man accused of murder. Erling helps to build up the confidence of the other boys and encourages them to confront the injustices in the prison and slowly, he begins to plan an escape. This story of revolt, rebellion and juvenile resistance is the personal struggle of two men who refuse to give up on their goal. Set in Norway in the 20's, this drama is based on actual events.
