As the deafening rattle of war dies away, we see Stevo running around in a field amongst the ruins of his badly damaged house. His wife was killed by a grenade and he has been left alone to raise his children. When it seems that the worst is over, we hear a terrible rumbling in the distance which is coming closer and closer. The confused Stevo discovers that the vehicle which has stopped in front of the house, is not a killing machine, but rather, an unusual contraption belonging to Circus Fantasticus. Getting to know this group of bizarre but utterly human circus characters changes the lives of Stevo and his children, and sets them off on a new journey. This Slovenian Foreign Language Oscar nominee blends the forgotten beauty of the circus with European magical realism and the absurdity of war.
