This is a documentary about the last years in the life of José de Sousa Saramago, the first Portuguese writer to be awarded a Nobel Prize for Literature. However, the film's focus is not only on the world of his books, his significant talent and his opinions, but particularly on his longtime relationship with his wife, Pilar del Rio. Indeed, Saramago himself always defended love as a means of becoming a better person. This enchanting and moving film, which is spiced with the humour of an aging cynic and atheist, has turned out to be an unexpected blockbuster, not only in Portugal where it became the national nominee for an Oscar, but also at many festivals all over the world. It is a low-key, documentary delight that should not be missed.
